Fruit Fly
Fruit Fly

Fly infestations become very irritating and often require professional fly extermination.  Before starting a fly control program,

  • First of all, determine what it is that attracts the flies.  Can you remove the attractant?  Or, can you minimize the source of attractant?
  • Next, what type of fly is it?  This will help eliminate the source of attractants and where they are breeding.
  • Also, start a good sanitation program.
  • Finally, develop a schedule to maintain fly control.  Include regular visits by a pest control professional.

Elimination or Minimization of the source of attractant

Organic material attracts flies.  The sources of attractants that can not be eliminated should be minimized.  Remove dog feces in your backyard a few times a day.  Cover trash cans and dumpsters.  Maybe a neighbor is harboring the source of the attractant.  Show them the fly attractants in their backyard and the infestation in your yard.  If it seems likely they are unwilling to cooperate, call the proper city office for help in maintaining sanitary conditions in our city.

Know what type of fly you have.

Using Fly Tape is the fastest way to collect flies.  Use this Identification Guide for flies found in households.  Is it a fruit fly breeding in rotting material?  Is it a drain gnat from unsanitary drains that contain enough organic material to allow breeding?  A phorid fly?  Are the flies in your home fungal gnats likely arising from over-watering plants that have developed a rotting root system?

The remainder concerns the larger flies that breed in dumpsters, dog feces, and the like.

Fly Extermination

The pesticide should list the type of fly.  Sprayers, like a power mister that applies smaller droplets, are best.   Fly deterrents such as plastic bags filled with water and chemical repellents are helpful but don’t eliminate the problem.  Part of the adult population can be destroyed using fly tape and fly traps.   But it won’t take care of newcomers that quickly lay enough eggs to repopulate your yard with flies in a day or two.  Proper placement of fly traps, fly tape, and zappers is critical but rarely accomplished.  Also, using fly bait around your perimeter helps grasp newcomers before they enter the yard.

In conclusion, remove their source of food and breeding material.  Also, identify the type of fly.  Next, employ proper sanitation.  Lastly, use a chemical or biological means of fly extermination.  Continued efforts will achieve Fly Control.

Beneficial insects that predate flies are known to be effective. When applied regularly, Nematodes have been shown to eliminate the larval stage of flies in feces, which spells fly extermination or close to it.

Commercial Facilities with Fly Problems:

Food manufacturing facilities and restaurants remove filth through proper sanitation. Wash all trash containers and messy areas and then sanitize them regularly. In addition, schedule regular treatments by a professional pest control company.  Several types of flies can be controlled using Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.).  The species of fly should be on the label of the product label.
