- First, ingested poison poisons predator birds. When raptors eat the gizzard of the pigeon, the poison grain is still in it.
- Second, pigeons can not be run out of their nesting location. Spikes and other deterrents will only move them a short distance. Spikes and netting will keep them off of a storefront. But they end up nesting under the HVAC units on top of the roof. The dust from pigeon feces, down feathers, and dander is very unhealthy.
- Third, pigeons can not be relocated. Today’s feral pigeons are descendants of the passenger pigeons. They will return to their roost if released at a distance of over 1,000 miles. The only thing that can be done with today’s feral pigeons is to remove and then euthanize them. A complete failure of pigeon spikes is seen on the campus of Texas Tech. Feral pigeons are there to stay once they bond to a nest site. Spikes are a short-term solution.

Pigeon Clean-Up
Pigeon control is an important part of pest control services in the Corpus Christi area. Barricading with Expanded Metal
Barricading smaller ledges with expanded metal is permanent. Metal screen will hopefully last a decade or two. Netting will need to be patched or replaced every several years.
This gazebo was quoted to be fully covered in bird netting to keep pigeons off the top roost which would have cost five or six thousand dollars. We bolted expanded metal on the upper ledges and called it good for a fraction of the cost.
Pigeon Control Deterrents are often Not Effective
Bird Spikes and shock tape (or bird deterrent tape) are NOT effective for pigeon control. Except when it is acceptable to move them to a neighbors house or building. Owl-Eye balloons and fake owls will work for a short time for any type of bird. They must, furthermore, be moved several times a week, hence, the pest birds will get used to them. Pigeon poison, such as Avitrol, will make the pigeons sick before they die. As a result, poisoned pigeons are prime targets for protected birds of prey. The Bird Repellent Sound will work in some situations and not in others. It is a periodic sound of a predator bird or screaming bird of its own kind.
